Books that close by the 7th give you three weeks of the month to actually use the numbers. Books that close on the 25th are history, not management. The difference is almost never effort — it's sequence.
Day 1–2: bank and gateway reconciliations. Day 3: sales and purchase cut-off checks. Day 4: expense accruals and provisions. Day 5: GST and TDS tie-outs. Day 6: review variances against budget. Day 7: lock the period and circulate the MIS.
Two rules make it stick: never let a reconciliation item age past 30 days, and never open a new month before the last one is locked. Everything else is detail.
Clients who adopt this framework typically cut their year-end audit time in half — because the audit becomes a review of twelve clean closes instead of a twelve-month excavation.
